Fetească Regală — The variety was identified around the 1920s.

04.09.2026

Parent varieties: A semi-aromatic grape variety resulting from the natural hybridization of Fetească Albă and Grasă de Cotnari. The variety was identified around the 1920s.

It is cultivated in most regions of Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

Area planted with Fetească Regală in Romania: 12,639.32 ha.

Area planted with the variety in the Republic of Moldova (registered in the RVV as of 30 December 2023): It ranks second among indigenous varieties in terms of planted area, covering 385.7 ha, including 110.86 ha registered for the production of wine products with PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status.

The grapes of this variety have a typical floral and grapefruit aroma, with nuances of fresh pear and citrus. However, they generally have a more full-bodied and textured palate than their “parents.” Fetească Regală can produce medium-bodied wines when aged in stainless steel, as well as full-bodied wines when matured in oak barrels, with intense aromas and excellent ageing potential. The fine tannins found in the grape skins contribute to the wine’s ageing capacity.
